This handsome Victorian doorstop which is made of painted heavy cast iron is of a lion sat upright majestically on his plinth and dates from the second half of the 19th century.
This nice quality door stop is a cast model based on the lion ornaments that were designed by British sculptor Alfred Stevens and fitted to the railing outside the British Museum in London.
This was dismantled in 1895 and placed around the city - some of them stand guard around the Wellington Monument in St Paul's Cathedral.
This lion is modelled after these sculptures by Alfred Stevens and dates from the late 19th century.
A very nice decorative piece that stands wonderful on display.
