This rare antique musical singing saw which dates from the early 20th century is by Couesnon of Paris, France and is an interesting piece of musical equipment.

This French sonilame (sound blade) has a green velvet fabric covered handle to one end, an aluminium grip to the other, is embossed to both sides with Sonilame and the maker's details of Erie Mokel, Couesnon SA, 105 Rue Lafayette, Paris.

This unusual antique saw is different from a conventional saw as it does not have any teeth. It can be bent to play with either a bow or hammer and was made specifically by this French instrument maker to be used as a musical instrument. One of these can be can be found at the Philharmonie de Paris Music Museum.

Musical saws were popular in the early 20th century especially during the 1920s and 1930s being played as a novelty act, on musical hall stages and also used in radio broadcasts and film soundtracks.
