This rare antique hunting canteen which is well made by top maker James Dixon & Sons dates from the 19th century.

This Victorian hunting canteen was made to be used side saddle by a lady and has a dark leather case with two outer leather straps which are fitted with metal buckles and which would have attached the case to the saddle.

This case which has a red leather interior is fitted with a flask and sandwich case which fit nicely inside piggyback with the flask sitting on top of the sandwich box. Both the sandwich tin and flask have the James Dixon & Sons maker's marks. The flask which has a screw top has been fitted with a new cork so does not leak.
