This handsome Victorian fire bucket which was hand made in 1877 from thick high quality boiled leather (often called cuir bouilli) has a wonderful aged patina and is stamped to the underside with the maker's details of A Ross and Co, Bermondsey, C & M and with the date of 1877.
A. Ross and Co was a leather tanning and manufacturing company based in Bermondsey, London which was the heart of the UK's leather and tanning industry. In 1901 they merged with Hepburn and Gale and became one of the largest 20th-century leather manufacturers in London.
These fire buckets were kept in prominent estate locations or homes filled with water or sand to quickly handle localised fires.
This top quality bucket has studs down the side seam, around the bottom edge and a studded copper band around the top edge.
A very nice usable antique bucket with a beautiful patina by a top maker and good to be marked with their details. Would make a stunning waste paper bin / basket and will look great in the home.
